Tensions in the Middle East escalated further after the United States reportedly carried out airstrikes on Kharg Island, a strategically important Iranian oil hub in the Persian Gulf. The island, which hosts one of Iran’s largest oil export terminals, was targeted during the latest phase of the ongoing conflict involving the US, Iran and Israel.
According to military sources and international media reports, the strikes focused on Iranian military infrastructure located on the island. The United States claimed that the operation resulted in the “total obliteration” of several military sites, though independent verification of the damage is still ongoing.
Large plumes of smoke and fire were reportedly seen rising from the island shortly after the strikes. Kharg Island is considered critical to Iran’s economy, as it handles a significant portion of the country’s crude oil exports. Former US President Donald Trump also drew attention after an old statement resurfaced in which he warned decades ago that a single strike on Kharg Island could significantly impact Iran’s oil capacity.
Iran has strongly condemned the attack and warned that it reserves the right to respond. Iranian officials stated that targeting energy infrastructure could further destabilize the region and trigger wider consequences.
Meanwhile, global leaders have urged restraint as the conflict continues to widen across the Middle East, raising concerns about shipping routes, oil markets and regional security.
